No cell phone info site would be worth its salt if it did not address cell phone problems.
The number one problem to avoid is moisture. If your cell phone gets wet, it will stop working. If it stays wet long enough, the internal parts will corrode and the damage will be irreparable. If you are naturally a klutz, if you spend a lot of time around water, or if you’re just worried about getting your cell phone wet, consider a protective case. Some of the better cases protect your phone so well that you can bounce it off the concrete and into the pool and still have it survive. At any rate, don’t use the phone with wet hands, don’t use wet fingers to push the buttons, and whenever possible avoid dropping your phone in the toilet.
Extreme temperatures can damage the battery of the cell phone. If you leave your phone in your car on a very hot day, chances are you’ve depleted your battery’s ability to work at optimum capacity. You may also have damaged the electronics of the phone itself. Extreme cold can cause the screen display to stop working.
The screen on the face of your cell phone is a pretty sturdy thing, but it’s still important to care for it as carefully as you do your eyeglasses. Use a microfiber cloth to clean it and if that’s not enough, try just a drop of alcohol on the cloth to clear away minute scratches and serious smudging.
There are less tangible problems with cell phones. If you have teenagers, make sure that they understand how much it costs for them to have a cell phone. Set specific limits on their time and texting, and make sure they understand that it is not appropriate to use the cell phone at school except in an emergency. A cell phone is a great gift for teens and a great tool for parents, when used wisely.
The bottom line is, most cell phone problems can be avoided with a bit of forethought. It’s a lot more fun to play with cell phone features than to correct cell phone problems.
We all want the best cell phone features for our phones. Most cell phone plans offer you the standard list of consumer features. These may include:
Voicemail — standard voice mail usually allows you to play, replay, rewind, skip or save incoming voice messages. You can record your own greeting, or you can use the robot greeting provided by your server.
Call waiting — call waiting just lets you know when someone else is trying to call you while you’re already on the phone. You will be informed of incoming calls and can decide whether to accept the call, send it to voicemail, or ignore it altogether. Often the incoming phone number will be displayed on your screen.
Caller ID — caller ID allows you to see who’s calling you. If you have programmed in their number, you will not only see the number but the name of the person who is calling. You get to decide whether to take the call or not.
Camera — Now you have a camera with you all of the time. You can email the photos to your own account or send them directly to family and friends. Never miss a shot — you have your phone in your pocket.
Your plan may also include text messaging, wireless Internet access, modem function, and a dozen other functions, some of which you may never use. You may need a PDA to keep up with your schedule and your contacts, or you may want an MP3 player so that you’ll have your music with you. The GPS will get you where you’re going at a map application will tell you where you’ve been.
Smart phones obviously give you more options. You can sync your phone with your computer and backup the days information so that they can be restructured, store, and used in your business the next day.
You are also going to want text messaging. Unlimited texting is usually available for small price, so make sure your phone is text friendly unless you got really tiny thumbs. If you love to instant message then you may want a phone with a QWERTY keyboard.
Here are some other features you may want to look for.
WiFi — don’t expect your phone to be as fast as your computer, but as more and more businesses offer free WiFi, it’s a handy tool to have on your phone.
Touch screen — iPhone set the standard for touchscreen with both iPods and iPhone. It’s a convenient way to navigate, even with the smudged screen.
Speakerphone — you don’t always think about it, but a good speakerphone can really make a difference especially if you need to talk while your hands are busy. Listen to a speaker ahead of time so that you’re sure that the audio is clear and strong.
Memory card — check out the memory card slot and storage capacity. The ability to use higher capacity cards will make an enormous difference as you begin to use more and more of your phone’s capabilities.
Media player — beyond playing MP3s, many media players now allow you to organize your music, videos, and pictures in a way that makes it convenient to access them. You can repeat or shuffle, and you can create playlists just as you do on your computer at home.
When it comes to cell phone security, there’s just a lot of stuff out there that honest people don’t think about. If your husband text messaged you from the bank to ask for your checking account number or PIN, would you text back to him? If your answer was yes, suppose your husband set his phone down on a table in the restaurant where he was having lunch. Suppose that some unscrupulous son-of-a-gun picked up the phone, looked in the address book and found his wife’s contact information, and texted her for banking account access. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my.
Okay here’s another one. You are so proud of that new GPS feature on your phone. The first night that you have it, you enter personal information on the location of every family member and friend you have. Don’t forget to include your own information. After all it’s important to know how to get home. Now suppose that same unscrupulous son-of-a-gun wishes to access all of that information and use it to visit places where he thinks he might gain access to any number of items that he could pawn or sell, and that you and your family will never see again.
These examples are not far-fetched. They are, in fact, paraphrases of actual police reports. So how do you stop these low-lifes from accessing your information?
The answer to cell phone security is so simple, and yet more than 80% of people who own cell phones do not avail themselves of security built into the phone itself. Virtually every phone available today is equipped with a password lock. If you employ that password, no one can get into your phone until they enter a sequence of numbers and letters that you have set up. Program the phone now, while you’re thinking about it.
Next, go through your contact list and make sure that there are no charming nicknames and relationship information attached to contact. Don’t give a stranger easy access to intimate information about the people that you love.
If somebody texts you asking for specific personal information, don’t just text back blindly. Confirm the text — ask a question, give them a call, but don’t just presume that the person who texts you really is who they say they are. If you get a text from someone asking you to meet them, please please please verify that the message actually came from them. If you can’t verify, don’t go.
Use your head. There are lots of people out there who are just as honest as you are and there are a few who are not. By all means, take advantage of all of the features your cell phone has to offer, but make cell phone security a priority when you do.
When your cell phone stops working all you really want is a quick cell phone fix. Whatever the problem, you’d really like to be able to fix it yourself at home. While not all of the cell phone problems you encounter will be DIY fixes, there are several things that you can try to repair some of the more mundane problems that you will encounter.
Scratches on your screen
It is important to clean your cell phone screen with a microfiber cloth, just as you would your eyeglasses. If the screen is still pretty messy, you can use a small drop of alcohol on the cloth to clean the screen. Still have scratches? Apply a tiny dab of a polishing toothpaste to the screen and rub gently into the scratches themselves. Often the toothpaste will polish out the scratches and give you a much clearer screen.( toothpaste also works on CD and DVD scratches, at least maybe long enough for you to make a copy).
Discolored blotches
Do you have some spots on your cell phone screen? Sometimes pixels get stock and create blotches on your screen. Use your thumb or a smooth plastic device to roll the the blotches and dispersed the color that’s on the screen. Sometimes just a little applied pressure, done carefully of course, will cause discoloration to disseminate.
Freezing up
Most cell phones have a sequence of button pushing that will unfreeze your cell phone. Check your owner’s manual for your particular model for this information, or google it to find out which buttons to push. If the normal reset does not work, take the battery out. Leave it out for a count of 10 or 15 seconds, and put it back in. Wait another 10 or 15 seconds and turn the phone back on.
Information glitches
If your phone stops displaying information correctly( names, numbers) the problem may be your Sim card. Just as you took out the battery for power issues, remove the SIM card, leave it out a few seconds, and put it back in. If you don’t know where to find the SIM card, it is usually under the battery.
Wet phone
Okay, we’ve all done it. I forgot that I had a soft drink sitting in the car console and set my cell phone down into the Coke Zero. Yum. So, how do you fix a wet phone?
Let it air dry
Take the phone part. Place all of the parts on hand towel on a countertop. Leave them alone. For a while. Days.
Try a hair dryer.
Take the phone apart. Place all of the parts on hand towel on a countertop. Set the blow dryer on cool/low and gently blow the water away from the cell phone parts. Don’t get the dryer too close or too hot. You don’t want to melt the phone, just dry it.
Use a bag of rice.
That’s right. Fill a large Ziploc bag about halfway with rice. Uncooked rice. Dry rice. Take the cell phone apart. Put all of the components into the bag of rice. Make sure that each component is well covered with rice. Depending on how wet the phone is, leave the bag on the counter top overnight or for several nights. The rice will absorb all of the moisture in the phone and you will be able to put it back together and use it as if it is brand-new.
There will be times that the repair of your cell phone will be beyond you, but for a few of the everyday problems you may find a cell phone fix here that will work.
